The purpose of the lesson: Talking about your school timetable.
Size of the class: 40 students.
Age: 11-12 years old.
In this lesson, the students learn to talk about their school timetable using the following vocabulary:
School subjects: Literature, Math, Geography, History, and English.
Days of the week: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
For this lesson, the teacher uses two sets of cards (an English set and in my case, a Vietnamese set). The cards will be displayed on the board as is shown in the picture below:
As you can see, at the bottom of the board is a timetable written in Vietnamese. The students should be very familiar with it; they won’t have any problem understanding it. Above the timetable are the English cards, cards that have to be placed by students (plasticine can be used) next to their Vietnamese correspondent. The timetable will be projected on the board and the English cards can be replaced with simple words written on the board.
Once the cards are placed, the teacher works with students on pronunciation. According to my experience, the students know how to spell the above vocabulary but they don’t know how to pronounce it.
The teacher asks students to draw a timetable (in pairs) that is true for them, using the subjects they have just studied.
In the same pairs, practice the following dialogue:
S1: When do you have Math?
S2: I have Math on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
S1: Which classes do you have on Tuesday?
S2: I have Geography and Literature on Tuesday.
At the end of the lesson, a crossword game using the vocabulary studied in this lesson is a good choice.
