ESL teachers in Vietnam – cost of living – part 2
We have seen in the first part the cost of housing and transportation in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. In this second part I am going to tell you the cost of food and drinks.
To be honest, I don’t go shopping very often, my wife takes care of this part. She is Vietnamese and she knows better where can find all necessary stuffs. Things you have to know about living in Vietnam.
Usually, English teachers in Vietnam are English native speakers, mainly from USA, Canada, Australia and England (but not only). Those countries have a high quality life (at least this is what I know) and the environment is very different comparing with the Vietnamese one. Now, let’s enumerate the things that can be uncomfortable for you in term of “living in Vietnam”.
- Vietnam, particularly Ho Chi Minh City is a crowded place, extremely crowded comparing with the city I used to live in Romania. For me, Saigon is a stressful place, very noisy and crowded. Depends the place you come from, but for me, Saigon is not a good environment to live in.
- You are “white skin” that means you are rich, so everybody tries to sell you something. At the beginning is funny but soon you will end up hating all those vendor sellers, lottery tickets sellers, motorbike-taxi drivers etc. You will be stopped on the street by these people as soon as you leave your hotel room.
- Hot weather in combination with pollution will be a great inconvenient. You will feel your skin very sticky and showers will be more important that food.
- Rainy season makes your life more difficult, it rains enough much to give you the feeling that it rains all day long. It is a discouraging weather. I hate teaching after rain (usually rains when I have to go to work … I hate it). ( … read the full article)
